I've reached a point where I'm really weary of horror movies that feel incomplete and don’t quite live up to expectations, and this first-time feature from writer-director Michael Shanks unfortunately falls into that category. When I say “incomplete,” I mean films that aren’t particularly frightening, rely on predictable plot developments, include vague elements without explanation, and ultimately fail to provide audiences with anything substantial in terms of meaning, themes or insights. The result is often a story that wanders aimlessly, doesn't make much sense, and fails to deliver on its potential for entertainment or originality. It’s especially disappointing when movies try to be “smart horror” but still don’t quite succeed, as this one does. "Together" centers around the strange and unsettling experiences of Tim (Dave Franco) and Millie (Alison Brie), a couple—who happen to be married in real life—portraying a long-term unmarried pair whose relationship is struggling, creating a distance between them even greater than what many experienced during periods of social distancing. Things get more complicated when this longtime urban couple moves to the countryside; Millie starts a new teaching job while Tim tries to figure out his future as an aspiring musician. They seem to genuinely care for each other, but will that be enough to keep their relationship going? And, when they find themselves caught up in a series of bizarre paranormal events that simultaneously push them emotionally apart while physically drawing them closer together than they ever thought possible, their lives and world are completely disrupted. The filmmaker attempts to explore the challenges and joys of long-term relationships using horror as a backdrop. While this approach might seem promising on paper, the actual execution leaves something to be desired, leading viewers through a series of underdeveloped and disconnected scenes that don’t quite come together. Whatever connections were intended here often feel scattered, incorporating various clichés that simply don't work well together. The film shifts between romantic moments, mild scares, and occasionally campy humor, but never establishes a consistent tone as the story unfolds. Moreover, the chemistry between the two actors doesn’t always seem believable, leaving you to question why they are together in the first place and how they’ve managed to stay together for so long. Ultimately, this movie ironically fails to hold “together” itself, which is a major letdown considering it was supposed to be one of the most anticipated releases of the summer. Sadly, this reflects what's been happening with many contemporary horror films, even those that have tried to elevate the genre. There’s not much here worth sticking around for; I suggest you pass on this one.
