TODAY’S SPECIAL is a feel-good comedy centered around food, crafted by Aasif Mandvi, Jonathan Bines, and helmed by David Kaplan (Year of the Fish). The film follows Samir, portrayed by Aasif Mandvi (known for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and THE LAST AIRBENDER), a sous chef who aspires to be the head chef at a fancy Manhattan restaurant. After being denied a promotion, he abruptly resigns and tells his colleague Carrie (Jess Weixler, TEETH) that he’s going to Paris to train under a renowned French chef. However, those plans are derailed when his father, Hakim (Harish Patel, RUN FAT BOY RUN), suffers a heart attack, forcing Samir to take responsibility for Tandoori Palace, the family restaurant in Jackson Heights which is close to failing. Samir’s connection with his parents and his cultural background immediately comes under scrutiny. He hasn't spoken to his father since the passing of his older brother, and his mother Farrida (played by Madhur Jaffrey, a celebrated cookbook author and actress) is focused on finding him a spouse. As Samir puts aside his ambitions, he struggles to learn Indian cuisine in an effort to save the family business. Fortunately, he meets Akbar, a taxi driver who’s also a dedicated chef and storyteller (brought to life by Naseeruddin Shah, MONSOON WEDDING), a prominent figure in Indian cinema. Akbar encourages Samir and instructs him to rely on his instincts rather than just recipes; to stop rigidly planning his future, and to truly experience life. With Akbar's help, Samir gets an opportunity to reconnect with his heritage and rediscover his love for living through the captivating world of Indian cooking. TODAY’S SPECIAL draws inspiration from Sakina’s Restaurant, a one-person play written and performed by Aasif Mandvi, which was developed and directed by Kimberley Hughes and received an Obie Award.
