Some unusual casting decisions initially cause some confusion, but ultimately this becomes a fairly enjoyable wartime adventure story. Rock Hudson portrays “Craig,” a Canadian character who discovers that a plan he believed had been rejected by British military leaders is now being put into action. His mission involves aiding “Col. Harker” (Nigel Green) in traversing eight hundred miles of the Sahara Desert to disrupt Field Marshal Rommel’s fuel lines, preventing his Afrika Korps from attacking Egypt. The two men have a difficult time working together, and this tension is made worse by the inclusion of a group of German Jews collaborating with the Allies under the leadership of “Bergman” (George Peppard). There's a general lack of confidence among them as they encounter various challenges, including an aerial engagement involving a Spitfire, interactions with Bedouin tribespeople, and confrontations with Fifth Columnists loyal to Kesselring, before their arrival leads to a surprising revelation. While George Peppard’s portrayal and his attempt at a German accent are jarring, Hudson doesn't quite embody the traditional heroic persona; however, he performs adequately in this role, largely due to Nigel Green’s strong performance, whose stoic demeanor could have realistically earned a BAFTA nomination. The impressive visual effects later in the film unleash chaos on the story and lead to an energetic and explosive conclusion. It is a well-made action movie that conveys the look and harshness of desert combat, incorporates some dark humor into dialogue sometimes marked by sarcasm, and provides a couple of hours of entertainment for fans of the genre.
