I was really hoping for something more from this film. It didn’t quite live up to expectations. Mike Barker directed To Kill a King, with a script by Jenny Mayhew. The cast includes Tim Roth, Dougray Scott, Olivia Williams, James Bolam, and Rupert Everett. Richard G Mitchell composed the music, and Eigil Bryld was in charge of cinematography. The movie takes place at the close of the English Civil War, when King Charles 1st (Everett) is a prisoner of Parliament. Sir Thomas Fairfax (Scott) and Oliver Cromwell (Roth), who are companions and work together, find themselves disagreeing about what to do next for New England. Because of significant problems during filming and limited funds, To Kill a King faced an uphill battle just to be recognized as a worthwhile historical film. Considering the questionable way this portion of English history is portrayed—something that upset many historians—it’s easy to assume the movie isn't very good. But it turns out that’s not entirely true. While definitely imperfect, it’s a thoughtful work that prioritizes relationships between characters over large-scale action sequences. If you’re looking for a film full of battles, this isn’t it; however, if you enjoy seeing how important people behaved during wartime politics in a historical setting, then the movie provides what it promises. The actors do a good job too. It earns a 7/10.
