Cary Grant delivers a superb performance within this incredibly stylish crime story. After having retreated to a life on the French Riviera, "John Robie" unexpectedly becomes involved as his former persona, “Cat,” seems to have returned and is targeting wealthy individuals for their jewels. John Williams also makes an impact in his role as the insurance investigator "Hughson," who ultimately accepts Grant's assurances and joins him in the search for the real thief. Then we are introduced to Jessie Royce Landis ("Jessie"), a successful American businesswoman, along with her attractive daughter, "Frances" (Grace Kelly). The mother is set on finding a suitable partner for her daughter—and, naturally, romantic feelings begin to emerge. Hitchcock maintains suspense as both the romantic and criminal aspects unfold simultaneously before converging in a fairly thrilling finale. I occasionally thought Kelly came across as somewhat distant, but here she manages to remain relatable enough to contribute well to the playful dynamic between them. The level of care given to every aspect is remarkable; it’s simple to get drawn into the relaxed, superficial, yet undeniably desirable existence of the wealthy elite!
