The allure of finding safety and the chance for an improved existence keeps the dream of reaching a better place alive, especially for people desperate to change their situations—like refugees trying to escape difficult circumstances. Sadly, this promise is often just that – a hope that remains consistently out of reach. Writer-director Mahdi Fleifel’s first narrative feature explores these conditions through the story of Palestinian cousins Chatila (Mahmoud Bakri) and Reda (Aram Sabbah), who, similar to many migrants from the Middle East, have left their lives in Lebanese refugee camps hoping for a better future in Europe. They aim to settle in Germany, but like so many others, their journey gets stuck in Greece, which serves as the entry point to the rest of the continent and their ultimate destination. Unable to afford smugglers who could provide fake documents and passage, the cousins live on the streets of Athens, struggling to survive through various means, including theft and taking advantage of opportunities. Their situation is intensely frustrating, made more complicated by Reda’s intermittent drug use, which causes financial instability and increases anxiety about their inability to move forward. This leads them to pursue a series of increasingly risky plans in an attempt to achieve their goals—but will these questionable actions succeed? The film delves into the repeated sense of desperation that refugees often experience, particularly given current realities, and it does so with genuine empathy for the characters’ difficult circumstances and without much judgment, largely thanks to the strong performances from the two leads. The overall atmosphere is enhanced by grainy, gritty 16mm cinematography that visually reinforces the daily lives of these struggling protagonists. The film also draws inspiration from classics like “Midnight Cowboy” (1969) and “Casablanca” (1942), incorporating many plot elements as respectful tributes to those celebrated Oscar winners. Despite its merits, the movie occasionally feels unfocused, with some sequences left unresolved and others that feel overly complex. At times, it seems the filmmaker wasn’t sure whether to create a truly original story or one that offered well-meaning but somewhat superficial nods to classic films—resulting in something of an uneven experience. Nevertheless, “To a Land Unknown” effectively offers viewers a glimpse into a world most people don't see but urgently need to understand.
