I didn't know what to think of this film when I stumbled across it while looking through Netflix. The promotional image suggests a gritty police thriller, but further investigation revealed it’s actually more of a comedy. I hadn’t encountered it before, though it seemed to have received positive feedback, so recently my friends and I decided to watch it together. It's an entertaining film—a classic British comedy. The basic plot could easily be a serious crime narrative, but the way it’s handled makes it wonderfully silly. Things kick off almost immediately when PC Angel is informed that he’ll receive a promotion, but will also be transferred to a quiet little town where excitement consists of watching grass grow or drinking heavily. From there, things only get worse for Angel. His new coworkers are strange and generally ineffective as police officers. The rule-following Angel grows increasingly exasperated, and his only ally is the son of his new boss—whom he arrested on his first day. As bizarre “accidents” begin to occur, the movie’s explanations for why they're "accidents" rather than crimes become increasingly ridiculous. It seems the special effects team picked up a few techniques from Monty Python when it comes to exaggerated and gory scenes. The climactic confrontation between Angel and the completely bonkers group that keeps the town “tidy” through extreme measures includes brief nods to numerous action movies. The number of shots fired, and the proportion of misses compared to hits, is simply unbelievable. It was so absurdly hilarious that it’s hard to put into words. If you're looking for some good British humor, I suggest this one. It's a well-made comedy and considerably more enjoyable than the current crop of “comedies” which rely on getting drunk or falling down and vomiting.
