Kenneth Axel Carlsson on Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

8/10 · Dec 25, 2014

A Soviet agent has infiltrated the Circus, which is essentially British intelligence. George Smiley (played by Gary Oldman), previously dismissed from the organization, is brought back in secret to identify this mole. He gathers a small group of people to assist him as he investigates, with several individuals under suspicion: Percy (Toby Jones), Esterhase (David Dencik), Roy Bland (Ciaran Hinds), and Bill Haydon (Colin Firth). Even his longtime associate, Control (John Hurt), at one point suspected Smiley himself. The film was directed by Tomas Alfredson, someone whose work I really enjoy; he’s also responsible for the vampire film _Let the Right One In_ and the excellent _Four Shades of Brown_. He's exceptionally skilled at establishing a dark and enigmatic atmosphere, which he achieves perfectly here. The movie unfolds deliberately, with minimal music and a muted color palette – all ideal elements for a spy story like this one. Experiencing this film is akin to observing someone meticulously assemble a jigsaw puzzle. It requires patience and close attention to detail. Valuable things often demand time, and this movie recognizes that. Viewers must pay careful notice because the narrative frequently shifts between the present day and flashbacks. Characters who have passed away reappear in memories of the past, helping us piece together the complete picture. Ultimately, this film isn’t for everyone; it demands an engaged viewer who appreciates a measured pace and thoughtful storytelling. I'll be honest, I attempted to watch this movie three times before I managed to see it all the way through. While I don't typically gravitate towards films of this type, I can always appreciate outstanding performances and the artistry of a truly gifted director. As such, this film transcends being merely a spy story; it becomes an exploration of people living on the precipice of conflict, struggling to survive, and searching for the single threat that could potentially dismantle everything and bring down the British empire.
