Like sex, golf is something you can find pleasurable even if you aren’t particularly skilled at it. Ron Shelton directed this film, and Kevin Costner, Rene Russo, and Don Johnson star in *Tin Cup*, which is a romantic comedy sports movie about golf that even someone who doesn't like golf (like myself) can appreciate. Costner plays an ex-pro golfer who, after meeting Russo—who’s trying to impress her boyfriend, played by Johnson—discovers renewed enthusiasm for the sport and maybe even romance. But he first has to contend with Johnson’s flashy and arrogant rival golfer. Sports movies often struggle to be worthwhile because they have so little room to maneuver; there's only so far you can push that kind of story. This is a standard example—a washed-up athlete getting another chance at greatness. It should feel tedious, like the sport itself (sorry golfers, I just don’t understand it), but Shelton, with strong performances from the leads, delivers a genuinely charming, exciting, and thoughtful sports rom-com. The characters are exceptionally well-developed; they're people you can easily support or, in David Simms’ case (played by Johnson), boo. It shows how talented the director and writers—Shelton and John Norville—are that these characters avoid being clichés, and importantly, they have sharp dialogue to deliver. Golf isn't really the main focus here; it’s about the characters and their reactions to shifting human emotions that propels this film forward. Well-known golfers of the era appear in cameos, which are a nice touch, while Cheech Marin also has a role he handles perfectly. You don’t need to be a fan of golf or sports movies to enjoy this one; it's simply an enjoyable film for everyone. 8/10
