Alice Lowe takes on nearly every role in this oddball story centered around "Agnes," an immortal character journeying through time with the goal of finding a 17th-century highwayman (Aneurin Bernard). The catch is that whenever she manages to create circumstances where they can be together, she meets her end! The narrative then restarts, and we follow Agnes as she appears in various forms across different eras, along with the highwayman who transforms into a world-weary rock star. She receives guidance from "Scipio" (Jacob Anderson), whose function is reminiscent of a Shakespearean fool, plus support from her maid/close friend "Meg" (Tanya Reynolds) and an eccentric husband portrayed by Nick Frost, leading to numerous silly escapades. It feels like a combination of Peter Greenaway and Terry Gilliam, with elements of "Monty Python," as the humor has a physical, violent quality that initially amuses but quickly loses its impact. That’s really where the film falters; it seems stretched out from what would have been better suited as a short story to pad ninety minutes. After the initial concept is presented and the comedic tone established, the movie appears satisfied with simply advancing the timeline to repeat a similar narrative. I appreciated the core idea, and Lowe certainly shows some good comic ability early on in her interactions with her charming husband, but Bernard’s appeal seemed more about his appearance than his acting abilities, and ultimately the whole experience just lost its momentum. Zach Wyatt is amusing as an unreliable tarot card reader, but overall it felt too much like a rather flimsy comedy for my taste.
