Karra Elejalde portrays “Hector,” who finds himself observing something unusual in the nearby woods while relaxing in his new garden with binoculars. Initially, it appears to be an entity with striking red eyes, quickly followed by what seems like a nude woman. Curiosity compels him to investigate, leading him to stumble upon a body and subsequently being attacked by an unidentified man whose face is obscured by blood-soaked bandages. The identity of this assailant becomes a central question as he then proceeds to a secluded woodland laboratory where Nacho Vigalondo plays “El Joven,” a scientist who has apparently created some form of time-traveling device, resulting in multiple versions of “Hector” appearing. The young scientist is increasingly perplexed about how to handle the situation while this latest "Hector" decides to eliminate his counterparts and use the girl whose body triggered the entire sequence of events (Bárbara Goenaga) as bait. It’s a somewhat humorous drama that brought to mind a 1980s “Doctor Who” series, complete with eccentric personalities and a touch of mischievous voyeurism. Elejalde maintains an entertaining presence throughout, despite numerous plot inconsistencies – such as the lack of explanation for how everything began – and it remains an enjoyable film that could almost be effectively presented as a silent movie to highlight the absurdity of the recurring but never quite identical situations. It’s plausible that each iteration of “Hector” experiences some form of memory loss with each jump, contributing to his increasingly foolish behavior. Considering its limited budget, it manages to pack in a considerable amount within ninety minutes; if you prefer science fiction without elaborate special effects or sound design, this might appeal to you. I found it quite agreeable.
