It feels like just yesterday I was an oddity; now I'm simply a hobbyist. Nicholas Meyer directs and adapts Time After Time from a story by Karl Alexander and Steve Hayes. The film features Malcolm McDowell, David Warner, and Mary Steenburgen. Miklos Rozsa composed the music, and Paul Lohmann handled the cinematography. It’s truly charming—a fantastic concept brought to life with equal skill. The filmmakers conceived of placing Jack the Ripper against H.G. Wells in 1979. After the Ripper (Warner) used Wells’ (McDowell) time machine to evade Whitechapel police in 1891, Wells is compelled to pursue the notorious killer to San Francisco in the future. There have been countless movies built around characters displaced from their familiar surroundings, but it's a pleasure to encounter one with such an inventive starting point. The Ripper views the violence on the streets of San Fran and believes he’s meant to be part of it. Wells, meanwhile, is disappointed to discover that this isn't the ideal society he imagined, though his interest in science keeps him engaged by what he sees. It doesn’t hurt that he has attracted the attention of Amy Robbins (Steenburgen), who is also captivated by his refined ways. Of course, the enjoyment can’t last forever; eventually, the suspense and darker elements of the narrative need to emerge. Meyer manages a good balance, inserting glimpses of evil as Jolly Jack, dressed in a waistcoat and money belt, continues his violent activities, then shifting focus to Wells and Amy as they attempt to form a connection while trying to convince the authorities that a dangerous person is among them. The story develops well, significantly increasing the tension, and one can’t help but wonder if H.G. and Amy have any chance of success. The depth of the characters and the quality of the storytelling ensure that we become invested in what happens with this wonderful time travel adventure. 8.5/10
