This is an intense, somber Eastwood film centered around a detective working in New Orleans. The story follows a man who’s gone through a divorce and is trying to manage raising two daughters while simultaneously investigating a serial rapist and killer. He's also attempting to build a romantic connection with a woman (Geneviève Bujold) and confronting his own internal demons, which he finds are disturbingly similar to those of the criminal he’s hunting. “Tightrope” (1984) exists within Eastwood’s detective filmography, but it doesn't quite reach the level of enjoyment or excitement found in movies like “Dirty Harry” or “The Gauntlet.” It leans toward a darker and more serious atmosphere, with touches of something almost distasteful. While some elements might remind viewers of the first "Dirty Harry," the overall feel is closer to "Blood Work." The film’s title alludes to the precarious balance someone maintains between their better impulses and their darker nature.
