This drama creates a genuinely unsettling feeling. It uses a detached observational style to portray the short period Martin Bengtsson spent with Inter Milan in 2004. He was a slight but resolute 16 year old who was signed by this famous football club and immediately encountered difficulties throughout his brief experience of professional soccer. Erik Enge gives a strong performance; his ambition and willingness to make sacrifices to achieve his goals are powerfully conveyed as the film gradually reveals a culture where winning is paramount. Not being able to speak Italian doesn't help the young Swede, nor does his youth – but it quickly becomes apparent that this kind of training environment isn’t intended to build camaraderie. It’s intensely competitive; failure results in being sold or something even worse. Fortunately, he befriends "Ryan" (Alfred Enoch), who speaks English and helps him navigate things, buy a car (even though he's too young to drive), and experience the nightlife where he meets model "Vibeke" (Frida Gustavsson). His supervisors disapprove of this relationship, and combined with the constant isolation and pressure he faces, it becomes clear that his mental well-being is as fragile as his physical condition. The film directly targets an industry – I believe it's entertainment in general, not just soccer – that prioritizes success above all else. Individuals are treated as commodities, like items on a shelf. The obstacles he confronts are significant but so are the potential benefits, and those who manage things—rather than participating themselves—are calmly harsh and extremely cautious. Bengtsson was essentially a boy in an adult world. He felt alone, cut off from others, and was treated little better than a performing animal. Honestly, the film itself isn't particularly well-made; the production values are quite simple, and I began to find the observational camera work irritating. However, the underlying themes of a desperate need to succeed overriding everything, and an industry that shows minimal concern for the welfare of those it attracts, make for a gripping, sometimes difficult, viewing experience.
