The film "Zaffan," starring Zafreen Zairizal, depicts a young girl happily living her childhood until her body unexpectedly begins to mature, resulting in a disturbing and violent awakening. Her mother offers comfort, and she proceeds to school, where she discovers that her friend, prefect Farah (Deena Ezral), is visibly repulsed by her sudden development. Soon, Zaffan finds herself excluded by her classmates, and despite her best efforts, she's unable to reconnect with them. This isolation leads to frustration which begins to surface in dreams, then escalates into more tangible manifestations—physical changes that increasingly transform her appearance, suggesting something less than human, as evidenced by her unusual food preferences. Within a traditional Malaysian community steeped in superstition, her rejection intensifies, leaving her feeling helpless. Is there any hope for assistance from the mysterious Dr. Rahim (Shaheizy Sam), with his unconventional approach and specialized products? While the film's production quality isn’t exceptional, Zairizal delivers an engaging performance as she quickly masters climbing trees and manages to navigate the rather basic visual effects. Moments of humor are present, particularly towards the end, which helps maintain a brisk pace while addressing a topic rarely explored in cinema. It would be suitable for television viewing, and the film is worth investing ninety minutes into.
