The initial moments of this movie, particularly those highlighted in promotional materials, show some genuine connection between Julia Roberts as "Georgia" and George Clooney portraying "David." Having been previously married, they find themselves traveling to Bali when their twenty-five year old daughter, "Lily" (Kaitlyn Dever), declares she intends to marry her boyfriend of a very short time, "Gede" (Maxime Bouttier). Even during the plane journey, it becomes obvious that they dislike each other intensely, yet must cooperate if they hope to prevent what seems like an impulsive decision. The unfolding events bear some resemblance to “Mamma Mia” (2008), though lacking the ABBA soundtrack and set in a more Eastern locale. The visuals are lovely; "Visit Bali" might be anticipating that audiences will want to experience those stunning beaches, where seaweed cultivation is common and you can encounter dolphins – although they appear quite aggressive! However, the plot itself feels as foreseeable as any of the sunsets we witness throughout this moderately brisk, superficial comedy, leading inevitably to an ending that’s easy to anticipate. Ultimately, it's the sharp banter between Clooney and Roberts that manages to keep this otherwise forgettable film afloat; unfortunately, that dynamic diminishes as the story progresses, leaving behind a visually appealing but ultimately shallow movie. It elicits more of a polite chuckle than genuine laughter, fitting comfortably within the romantic comedy genre. It’s an agreeable enough film—you likely won't dislike it—but it’s not something you’ll recall later on.
