The expectation with superhero stories should be that they’re exceptional, considering the extraordinary nature of the characters themselves. However, it's become increasingly clear that this standard hasn’t been consistently met in recent years; the sheer number of these films now available has diminished their uniqueness. This raises a fundamental question: how truly distinct can these movies be when there are so many? That’s really the central problem holding back this latest addition to the Marvel Universe. While it introduces a new group of heroes, the movie doesn't feel particularly innovative compared to what’s come before in the genre. Despite some small changes to an otherwise familiar and tired storyline, much of the plot feels like it was assembled from pieces of other superhero movies. The team of heroes, for example, resembles the dynamic seen in "Suicide Squad," and the quirky supporting characters seem lifted directly from the "Deadpool" films. Furthermore, the main conflict revolves around dangerous technology controlled by someone seeking power—a situation familiar to viewers of “X-Men: Days of Future Past” (2014) and "Logan" (2017). This collection of borrowed elements results in a plot that often feels contrived, somewhat disconnected, and ultimately predictable. Any attempts at breaking from the established formula, while occasionally diverting, feel like afterthoughts intended to appease critics who might point out the lack of originality. The film does have some genuinely amusing moments and benefits from strong performances by Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus; however, the action sequences are a bit lackluster and the special effects aren’t particularly impressive. Director Jake Schreier competently delivers what the movie set out to be—another dose of familiar content for devoted Marvel fans. And that's acceptable to a degree. Nevertheless, this isn't a film destined to become a classic, especially when it comes to originality. Cookie cutters are better suited for baking than filmmaking.
