Florence Pugh brings a welcome spark to this movie, but beyond that, I didn’t find it significantly different from the recent wave of Marvel films centered around saving the planet, which tend to follow a familiar trajectory of narrowly avoiding disaster only to stumble into another one before wrapping up with an announcement about a new series. Apparently, “Yelena” (Pugh) has been operating as an assassin for years under the direction of "Val" (Julia-Louise Dreyfus), whose CIA connections appear to have been conducting covert operations worldwide in an attempt to establish their own version of global stability. Now, though, members of the US Congress are investigating her activities, so it’s time to take care of any lingering issues. Naturally, things don't unfold as intended; instead of destroying the evidence, she inadvertently unites a group of former agency employees who decide to seek revenge on their own. Meanwhile, the “Winter Soldier” has been elected to the House and is now set on collaborating with those trying to hold "Val" accountable. It seems “Buckie” (Sebastian Stan) may need to join this odd assortment of individuals as it becomes apparent that one of them, the quiet and pajama-wearing “Bob” (Lewis Pullman), might share more similarities with “Brightburn” than “Superman.” What follows is a standard process of team formation, involving learning to rely on each other, sharing details from their often difficult backgrounds, and, naturally, fighting. David Harbour gives an energetic performance as "Red Guardian," and Pugh is subtly threatening, but the rest of the group members are instantly forgettable. Even though it’s presented as being darker than many similar films, it still has the ongoing problem that plagues the entire MCU: they introduce villains with considerable strength and power, yet you always anticipate a happy resolution. However, it's worth staying until the very end of the credits for what might be the most touching moment in the film. Ultimately, it’s about promoting the brand.
