Clint Eastwood plays “Thunderbolt,” who maintains a disguise as a priest to avoid detection until his true identity is discovered by someone familiar with his past. A fortunate coincidence allows him to flee when he hops into the vehicle of a driver called "Lightfoot," portrayed by Jeff Bridges. This younger man finds himself drawn to the thrill of having this new companion, and their growing rapport leads them close to breaking the law. Pursuing them relentlessly is “Leary,” played by George Kennedy, along with his less-serious associate, “Eddie” (Geoffrey Lewis). Their determination stems from the fact that "Thunderbolt" was involved in a robbery where $500,000 disappeared. While authorities reported the money recovered, some people suspect treachery and question who informed on whom. The only way forward seems to be bringing back together the original group to find the stolen funds—though this plan carries considerable danger, particularly for "Lightfoot," whose outspokenness has angered “Leary.” The film contains violence, but it’s balanced by genuinely moving scenes as the men develop a strong connection; the older man begins to feel protective of his eager and inexperienced friend. There are also humorous moments involving costumes and an unexpected disruption to a couple's romantic encounter. While the conclusion isn't entirely satisfying, it remains affecting, showcasing one of Eastwood’s more memorable tough guy characters alongside some of Bridges’ and Kennedy’s finest performances.
