Thunderball, directed by Terence Young and written by Richard Maibaum and John Hopkins from a story by Kevin McClory, Jack Whittingham, and Ian Fleming, features Sean Connery, Adolfo Celi, Claudine Auger, Rick Van Nutter, and Martine Beswick in the leading roles. The musical score is composed by John Barry, with cinematography by Ted Moore. This fourth appearance of James Bond (Connery) finds 007 sent to the Bahamas to stop SPECTRE’s number two man, Emilio Largo (Celi). Largo has stolen two atomic bombs from NATO and is demanding large sums of money as ransom, threatening to destroy major cities if his demands aren't met. Originally intended to be the first James Bond film, Thunderball became embroiled in a lengthy legal dispute between Kevin McClory, Jack Whittingham, and Ian Fleming. Eventually, an out-of-court settlement was reached, leading to its release in theaters in 1965. Following the tremendous success of Goldfinger and the rise of Bond as a cultural phenomenon, producers Albert Broccoli & Harry Saltzman felt pressure to elevate the franchise to maintain its popularity. They were also aware that numerous imitators were appearing on film and television. This prompted a shift toward larger-scale productions, with producers aiming for an abundance of spectacle; however, Thunderball represents a noticeable decline in quality compared to Goldfinger. Like many other Bond films, Thunderball generates divided opinions among fans. Some appreciate the straightforward entertainment value, viewing the gadgets as enhancing rather than detracting from Bond’s character. Technically, the film often shines, particularly in its underwater sequences; director Young creates some truly memorable Bond moments. The beautiful Bahamas setting is captured well by Ted Moore, Barry's score stands out as one of his best for a Bond movie, and Connery possesses undeniable charisma. The female characters are also enjoyable, especially Auger, who exudes captivating sexuality. The dialogue between Bond and M, Q, and Felix Leiter (Nutter is quite likable and more charismatic than Cec Linder in Goldfinger) is well-written and acted. For those who enjoy gadgets and daring stunts, Thunderball delivers with its assortment of specialized vehicles, underwater weaponry, and radioactive pills! There’s no doubt that the nearly $6 million budget is evident on screen. However, for other fans—and I am among them—the film has too many shortcomings to be considered a classic. While it's true that when it succeeds, it does so spectacularly (the extended underwater battle is truly impressive), there are also numerous slow stretches within the excessively long running time. Young himself expressed regret about not being able to achieve the right pacing due to the plot’s structure. Another significant issue for me is Celi’s portrayal of Largo. Visually striking with his white hair and eye patch, he certainly looks like a villain, but his physical presence doesn't quite fit the role of someone capable of challenging and overcoming Bond. The film’s conclusion also lacks the grandeur to properly reward viewers after sitting through over two hours. Nevertheless, it made an impressive $141 million at the box office! And the fervor that began with Goldfinger had reached epic proportions. The "more is more" approach proved effective for the filmmakers, ensuring Bond would remain in this grand, gadget-filled style for some time. Connery was not entirely pleased though; he voiced concerns about Bond losing his character and disliked the intense attention surrounding the films and his role within them. He would return for the next installment, You Only Live Twice, but it remained to be seen if that would be his final performance as Bond. 7/10
