Coming back from military service, Doolin (Robert Mitchum) discovers that Kogan (Jacques Aubuchon), a criminal element, is attempting to take over the family’s moonshine operation. His reappearance also draws attention from the local law enforcement (Gene Barry), creating immediate difficulties for him. While the narrative itself isn't particularly remarkable, the film possesses an undeniable visual flair. Mitchum seems comfortable in his role, and there’s something notable about the moments he shares with his actual son, James, who portrays his younger brother, Rob, as the boy decides he wants to assist his tough older sibling. There is a great deal of driving throughout, which means plenty of cars, shadowy rural roads, and atmospheric cinematography as the ninety minutes unfold along fairly expected lines toward an appropriate ending. Both Mitchum’s performances convey a certain sense of detachment that enhances the overall experience, and even though it isn't a film you’ll likely remember for its story, it might stick with you because it prompts reflection on what it was like to be young, full of hormones, wearing a denim jacket, and smoking cigarettes.
