It seems like connections now exist in countless ways, and there's a welcome increase—though sometimes gradual—in accepting some of these newer forms. One that has been gaining traction within the LGBTQ+ community is what’s called a “triad” or “throuple,” which involves three people. But as Greyson Horst’s first film demonstrates, building such a relationship requires effort, considerable dedication, and an abundance of honesty. These arrangements aren't simply about casual fun if they want to last. At the same time, because they are relatively new, there aren’t any established guidelines for them either. This allows for flexibility in figuring out what functions best for each group. That’s essentially what this funny comedy-drama is all about—it portrays the experiences of a solitary New York singer-songwriter (Michael Doshier) who unexpectedly finds himself drawn into a relationship with a married couple (Tommy Heleringer, Stanton Plummer-Cambridge) as their third partner. The three men share enjoyable times, plenty of passionate intimacy (discretion advised for some viewers), and also face emotionally difficult situations. However, the film highlights their willingness to try something different—something that meets their needs—no matter what others may think. It also examines the self-reflection they must do to discover what works best for each person, with all the potential ups and downs that can involve. In telling this story, the filmmaker has created a delightful and often humorous film featuring creative camerawork (some of the split screen sequences, reaction shots, and photo montages are among the finest I’ve ever seen) and an appealing soundtrack including several strong original songs. “Throuple” offers not only a look into a different kind of relationship but also shows that it's possible to make a well-crafted, captivating, and entertaining film with unique touches, even on a smaller budget. Try to see this if you have the chance; like its main characters, it’s likely to keep drawing you back.
