A Swedish family gathers on an island as their father, David (Gunnar Björnstrand), returns from a long stay in Switzerland, where he claimed to be working on his book. The group includes his daughter Karin (Harriet Andersson) and her physician husband Martin (Max von Sydow), plus his teenage son Minus (Lars Passgård). It’s immediately apparent that the family is struggling; they desire to present as a typical, supportive unit, but Karin has recently been released from a mental health facility, and her younger brother feels overlooked and is having difficulty with girls. The narrative explores internal struggles, requiring each person to examine their own behavior and relationships. The most intense of these examinations involves young Minus, who shares an unsettlingly intimate connection with his sister, which becomes even more complicated when she learns that her illness cannot be cured and seeks solace from him. Von Sydow and Björnstrand have limited screen time—the focus is primarily on the two younger actors. The film ventures into sensitive territory regarding morality and ethics of the 20th century while also revealing unsettling aspects of human psychology and mental health challenges. It’s a difficult film to watch, but it's undeniably impressive.
