Nathan on Three Thousand Years of Longing

5/10 · Oct 14, 2022

I went into _Three Thousand Years of Longing_ without strong hopes, and afterward I was left wanting something more. It’s not that any single aspect of the film disappointed me; in fact, Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton gave compelling performances, and their chemistry together was remarkable. The glimpses into the characters' pasts proved quite interesting, and I appreciated seeing George Miller present ancient civilizations through his perspective. While the main story wasn't particularly impressive, combining all these separate pieces resulted in a confusing experience. The film never seemed to find its rhythm and always felt like it was struggling to reach the end. I thought the beginning moved too quickly, preventing viewers from connecting with Alithea before she frees the Djinn. From that point on, the audience is constantly shifted between flashbacks and the present, creating a sense of disconnection. This scattered second act undermined any forward progress, leading to an anticlimactic third act. As a result, what should have been a poignant and heartfelt conclusion felt empty and uninspired. Considering it as a series of individual stories, I found it enjoyable enough, but the plot’s disorganization really holds it back.
