"Three Thousand Years of Longing" stands out as an exceptionally bold film this year. The movie benefits greatly from the captivating and appealing performances given by Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton; George Miller tackles a well-known story with care, using a particular style that centers on flashbacks told by the male lead. While these various stories from the past don’t consistently hold attention—in part because of how they're presented—they do help to develop some central ideas, even though the storytelling technique can feel repetitive. The impressive and evocative imagery significantly enhances the film, creating a truly cinematic experience that is likely to prompt reflection on topics like existence, longing, solitude, and contentment.
