It took me a while to realize Viveik Kalra was also in "Blinded by the Light" from 2019. Here, he portrays the character who gradually develops feelings for “Caleb” (Troye Sivan). Caleb had a single encounter that unexpectedly put him at risk of HIV exposure, which means he has to be careful and wait for test results over three months in anticipation of getting clearance. His doctor suggests joining a support group, where he encounters the reserved "Estha," and then... The film begins with considerable promise, and it's clear why Sivan is popular online – he possesses charisma and personality that he brings to this drama, rather playfully. However, the narrative soon loses momentum, and even though Ellen Burstyn delivers some delightful and spirited performances as his grandmother and Louis Gossett Jr. plays her partner "Benny," the writing declines noticeably, and the story largely stalls; this isn’t helped by a somewhat absurd storyline involving his friend “Dara” (Brianne Tju) and their supervisor “Suzanne” (Judy Greer). Ultimately, it feels like something designed to showcase Sivan, and he does just enough to keep things moving forward. It's disappointing that the story lacked more substance.
