I consider this to be the best installment of Kieslowski’s trilogy, although it may prompt some questions about how airport security operates going forward! The story revolves around “Karol Karol” (played by Zbigniew Zamachowski), who is in the process of divorcing his stylish wife (Julie Delpy) because of their inability to consummate their marriage—a situation that will leave him financially ruined. While waiting on a Metro platform, he meets "Mikolaj" (Janusz Gajos), and together they devise a scheme to bring Karol back to Poland, where he hopes to become wealthy and get even with his wife. His trip doesn’t unfold exactly as anticipated, but eventually, he finds employment in security, and when he overhears his employers' intentions to purchase land, he acts prematurely and quickly begins accumulating wealth. The film is amusing—though not laugh-out-loud funny—due to the clever writing and well-developed characters, which lead to a pleasant succession of events, some of which are less believable than others, as the resourceful and intelligent “Karol” meticulously plans his retribution. The other actors perform admirably; his hairdresser relative "Jurek" often takes over the spotlight in unexpected ways. It's concise, charming, and definitely worth seeing.
