This funny comedy Western features Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, and Martin Short. In 1916, three silent movie actors (Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, and Martin Short) are taken for genuine heroes by a lovely Hispanic woman (Patrice Martinez). She asks them to free an abused Mexican village from El Guapo (Alfonso Arau) and his bandits. "Three Amigos" (released in 1986) combines elements of "The Magnificent Seven" (from 1960) and "The Wild Bunch" (1969), though it’s a comedy Western at its core. The initial portion is mildly entertaining, but felt slow as I tried to get into the strange events unfolding. I wasn't finding much to laugh at and began to question what all the excitement was about—a friend I respect considers this one of his favorite films. Fortunately, the creative second half really takes off with some genuinely funny moments, beginning with the memorable scene where they are dying of thirst in the desert. The Southwestern scenery is also beautiful, and there are several attractive Latino women present. What else could you want from a movie like this? The film has a running time of 1 hour and 44 minutes and was filmed in Arizona and Universal City, California. GRADE: B+
