Gimly on Thor: The Dark World

7/10 · Oct 27, 2017

Even with almost no advertising beforehand, Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World performed very well at the box office. While it didn't get as many positive reviews from critics as Captain Phillips or Gravity did, it still made a lot of money. I’ve always been open about how I think Thor is the best Avenger in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so seeing a new movie starring him was something I was definitely going to see. Now I’m wondering if that fondness makes me judge the film too harshly because I want it to be good, or if it lets me off the hook simply for being glad it exists? I'll do my best to give an honest assessment. Thor 2 is visually impressive; there's no denying that. It has all the elements you’d expect from a superhero movie: action sequences, attractive actors, creatures, jokes, battles, stunning imagery, meaningful details and moments of genuine sadness. But beyond those surface-level qualities, it doesn’t offer much substance. It might sound like I'm listing a lot, and in some ways, it is, but I often felt the movie was rushed. Perhaps if they hadn’t been so eager to release a Thor sequel by the end of 2013, there could have been more time spent developing the story and making better use of director Alan Taylor (who has worked on Game of Thrones, Rome, and Carnivale). There was an underlying sense that it was just another movie, even though it’s generally quite good. 73% -Gimly
