Thor: Love and Thunder presents a story tinged with sadness about discovering contentment amidst hardship and loss, while still delivering the expected action sequences—which are at their strongest during an extended portion rendered in striking black-and-white. Christian Bale delivers a chilling portrayal, arguably making him one of the MCU’s most memorable antagonists recently, and Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman have a great rapport together. The film distinguishes itself visually and through its music, though the familiar plot is significantly improved when it concentrates on developing each character's journey. However, the frequent comedic moments—which lack the inventive humor seen previously—prevent deeper emotional engagement, particularly in the final act. Action sequences involving commonplace computer-generated shadow creatures suffer from expected shortcomings, and a subplot that doesn’t really connect feels like an advertisement for what’s coming next. Taika Waititi manages to succeed once more, but this time falls short of realizing the full promise of the concept. Rating: B+
