This film contains one of the most heartfelt romances I’ve encountered. The story unfolds within the structured but not overly restrictive setting of a Jesuit school, where we are introduced to the young "Comte Georges" (Francis Lacombrade) and his friendship with the younger "Alexandre (Didier Haudepin." It's important to note that this isn't portrayed as a sexual or exploitative connection; instead, they form an immediate bond, with the younger boy clearly captivated by his older friend, who seems to view "Alexandre" as someone he can help grow and care for. Predictably, the boys’ fathers are uneasy about any friendship that appears to involve even a purely platonic closeness between them, so “Fr. Superior” (Lucien Nat) tries to intervene, threatening to remove "George" from the school. From this point onward, those involved must make choices they're too young and inexperienced to fully understand or justify – and a sad ending begins to seem more probable as young "Alexandre" increasingly appears vulnerable and adrift. What stood out for me was its optimism; it avoids depicting abusive priests wielding canes and imposing rigid dogma—the Father Superior seems like an honest man genuinely worried about the well-being of his students, while the two boys simply come across as people who could realistically be friends for life. There are moments of sadness, frustration, and joy—and although perhaps a little more time could have been spent developing the characters, it remains a powerful depiction of two boys in love, a connection that is both prohibited and flourishing.
