It’s a peculiar experience. There's something about *‘This is Christmas'* that feels like intensely aged cheddar – exceptionally strong and mature. I’ve seldom felt as uneasy during a scene as I did with the opening speech on the train delivered by Alfred Enoch’s Adam; that kind of forced positivity and togetherness just makes me squirm, it’s unavoidable. Still, to be fair, the film handles it surprisingly well. I anticipated something much worse at that point I mentioned earlier, but as things progressed, the characters seemed to genuinely connect in a way that felt fairly realistic – which ultimately made that initial awkwardness feel appropriate, considering how uncomfortable first encounters can be. The actors contribute significantly to bringing the story to life. Alfred Enoch is quite good in the lead role, and Kaya Scodelario is also very capable. I wouldn’t describe their connection as spectacular, but it's certainly sufficient. Timothy Spall really throws himself into his part, and ultimately, his character’s storyline became my favorite – largely because he shares most of his screen time with Jack Donoghue, who performs admirably. Everyone else is perfectly acceptable. It initially made me uncomfortable, yet I did come to appreciate and value the film's underlying message. It’s dependable Christmas entertainment.
