It’s remarkable that *This Boy’s Life* succeeds in making me dislike Robert De Niro—or at least, his character does. I'm accustomed to seeing him in roles where he’s easy to root for; *Meet the Parents* is probably as close as he’s gotten to playing someone unlikeable. Dwight is truly awful in this film! However, that’s actually a credit to the movie itself. It can’t be terribly hard to create a character people despise, but I'm glad we get glimpses into how Dwight developed his personality—like the scene with the shooting. The story does drag on occasionally, though only slightly repetitively. The film boasts not just De Niro, but also a young Leonardo DiCaprio in his first starring part. Both actors are fantastic, and Ellen Barkin’s performance is noteworthy as well. You'll also spot Tobey Maguire and Carla Gugino among the cast. It's an unsettling experience to watch, but it remains a strong film from 1993.
