Wow, 'Thirteen' really goes places! I randomly chose this movie on Prime Video without knowing anything about it... even after doing a quick search to see if there was a sequel or something, like I usually do. I figured it would be a straightforward teen story, nothing special. I did notice one of Prime’s promotional images and thought it looked intense, but I just assumed it was some exaggerated reaction to a breakup or something equally trivial. Boy, was I wrong! Even so, for the first little while, I still expected that kind of predictable plot. But starting around the middle, things started getting more serious—pretty quickly, I found myself completely invested. It’s a really good film. I suppose that's why you shouldn't judge something by its appearance and why I don’t read up on movies before watching them – it’s so much better to be surprised! The acting is genuinely fantastic; Evan Rachel Wood stands out especially—she’s incredible! Nikki Reed (who I kept thinking was Charisma Carpenter...) does a solid job too, as does Holly Hunter (even though she reminded me of Mrs. Incredible...). Wood and Hunter really shine in the latter part of the film. Everyone else deserves praise too, including Jeremy Sisto. Newcomer Vanessa Hudgens is also featured. If I hadn’t checked beforehand that this was directed by the same person as 'Twilight', I probably would have guessed it right away—there’s a distinct style, especially at the beginning, although there are a few moments where it feels a little off. Apparently, these aren’t movies made for me, but I enjoyed both of them anyway – what can you do? Hats off to Catherine Hardwicke!
