This film carries a lot of personal significance for me, and I suspect it always will. It marked one of the initial moments when I recognized myself reflected in media as someone beginning to grapple with mental health challenges. While not flawless, I feel certain some scenes were unnecessarily explicit, particularly considering the movie’s intended teenage audience. Still, I recognize that such depictions are a genuine experience for many people and can be justified within the narrative. Despite this, the film succeeds in portraying what it's like to develop a mental illness alongside difficult family relationships, and how those conditions might arise from certain circumstances. Evan Rachel Wood delivers an exceptional performance as Tracy at a remarkably young age. I watched this movie around twelve or thirteen years old, and although I don’t connect with it quite as strongly now as I did then, it continues to resonate with me even after nearly ten years. I appreciate that it exists and portrays a difficult truth; discovering something relatable within that hardship, and feeling acknowledged because of it, can be genuinely beneficial.
