It’s a pretty imaginative take on the HG Wells story. After a war wipes out most people, what’s left are groups of survivors – led in an excessively dramatic way by Ralph Richardson and Margaretta Scott – struggling against disease, oppressive rule, and nature itself. Then Daniel Massey, playing “John Cabal,” appears and assists them in putting society back together, creating something close to a perfect world. The film succeeds in blending grandiosity with the desire for progress; it has an incredibly stirring musical score and some speeches that feel straight out of Shakespeare. It presents a future that feels disturbingly like a warning about governments controlling everything, about searching for new planets so we can spread our destructive tendencies elsewhere – and all of this seems to happen with the agreement of ordinary people. Unfortunately, I watched a colorized version, which took away almost all of the film’s impact; it made it feel like a low-quality animated movie. It's still okay to watch, but Massey isn't an Olivier, and I thought the whole thing was quite absurd.
