I’m a big fan of horror films; when they work well, they can really stick with you, leaving a lasting impression and keeping you up at night. Like most popular genres, though, it seems studios are more focused on creating sequels based on predictable plots rather than developing fresh, imaginative stories. Netflix isn't exactly known for its outstanding horror offerings, so I approached this film with some reservations. Things Heard & Seen might start with a familiar idea, but Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini manage to give it enough depth to keep you engaged. Amanda Seyfried, who starred in Mank, and James Norton, from Little Women, both deliver impressive performances as two very different people who find themselves together. Their characters have their own issues, but the husband is presented in such a harsh light that it’s difficult to connect with someone so unlikeable. The story puts a new spin on the classic ghost narrative, going beyond simple scares and including a notably brutal scene that comes out of nowhere. Even though there's a tense feeling throughout, the film moves at a slow pace, which makes for an extended viewing experience and ultimately leads to a disappointing conclusion. The third act initially builds up considerable excitement with surprising choices made by the characters that heighten the entertainment value. However, combining feminist ideas with the supernatural elements doesn’t quite work out, resulting in another horror movie that had so much potential to be significantly better. Rating: B-
