It’s a rough world, and this one is back! John Carpenter directed They Live, also adapting the screenplay from Ray Nelson’s short story Eight O’Clock in the Morning. The film features Roddy Piper, Keith David, and Meg Foster. Alan Howarth (and Carpenter) composed the music, while Gary B. Kibbe handled the cinematography. Nada, a jobless wanderer played by Piper, arrives in the city searching for employment. He discovers a special pair of sunglasses that reveal a hidden reality—a world populated by aliens manipulating Earth for their own purposes. See The Truth! Carpenter delivers subversive science fiction and it’s genuinely entertaining. It's clear that They Live is Carpenter's humorous commentary on those in politics who support the wealthy while everyone else struggles; where things will end up, nobody knows. It also pays tribute to the 1950s era of low-budget sci-fi films filled with monsters and suspense. Furthermore, it’s a wonderfully masculine action film, mixed with comedy. Expect plenty of shooting, punches, dodges, and lines that are sure to bring a smile. Piper isn't quite like Kurt Russell, but that doesn’t detract from his performance; he suits the part well. With his muscular build, 80s hairstyle, and quick wit, he embodies the Carpenter leading man of the decade. Keith David is also present, another physically imposing actor who is undeniably cool. It's believable that these two could save the world, even after a long, brutal fight in an alleyway—a sequence where Carpenter playfully mocks professional wrestling. When she’s not flexing her muscles, Meg Foster takes on the role of the leading lady, and her striking eyes fit perfectly within the world Carpenter has built. Carpenter tackles politics, but it's not his primary goal. He aimed to create a science fiction action film with subtle political themes as an underlying motivation. And that’s precisely what he achieved—and happily so. 8/10
