If I were to draw parallels between filmmakers and authors, Carpenter would be similar to Hemingway – though Carpenter tends toward flawed protagonists and occasionally exaggerated characters, while Hemingway favors subtlety. They're comparable figures within their respective fields. It’s a straightforward action-sci fi film; like Hemingway’s stories, it feels geared towards a male audience. There are moments of genuine fun, brutal intensity, and even humor to be found. Be sure to notice what I consider one of the best lines in movie history when the lead is robbing the bank—it's only tangentially related to "bazooka."
