It’s unusual for me to highlight a child actor as being exceptional, yet Bonita Granville delivers an impressive performance portraying the unpleasant, irritating, malicious, vindictive, and indulged "Mary" in this narrative centered on two educators—Merle Oberon and Miriam Hopkins—who become enamored with the physician, Joel McCrea. When these longtime companions attempt to correct the child’s chronic tardiness, she runs off to her affluent grandmother and fabricates a tale intended to ruin their professional lives and personal contentment. The plot is straightforward and effectively presented, illustrating the dangers inherent in dishonesty. The main actors are all excellent, with strong supporting roles from Catherine Doucet, Alma Kruger as the indulgent grandmother, and Margaret Hamilton—who also played "Miss Gulch"—as the housekeeper who immediately recognizes the child’s true nature. There have been some significant changes made from Lillian Hellman's original play; the connection between the women is purely friendly in the film, which contrasts with what was seen onstage, but that isn’t unexpected considering the business demands of the era, and it remains a worthwhile viewing experience.
