I was struck by how enormous Rockefeller's earnings were when he was at his peak; the figures mentioned are astonishing. His Standard Oil company appears in this intense story featuring Daniel Day Lewis as “Plainview.” He’s a man searching for silver who experiences an unexpected setback and finds something far more abundant – if you possess the knowledge to locate it. He steadily acquires land rights, and with his dependable partner “Fletcher” (Ciarán Hinds) and young son “H.W.” (Dillon Freasier), he begins developing his enterprise with the goal of constructing a pipeline extending over one hundred miles to reach the ocean. Throughout this process, their lives face hazards, and difficult decisions become necessary—particularly when an accident at one of the wells leaves the boy deaf. It’s at this isolated location that “Plainview” encounters his adversary. Not in a business rivalry – but in a deeply religious, Christian conflict. The son of a local farmer, aspiring clergyman “Eli” (Paul Dano), is involved, and the rest of the movie depicts one man attempting to undermine and defeat the other, rejecting each other’s firm beliefs. It's a deliberately paced film, though, and DDL delivers an exceptional performance as a man pursuing achievement for his own reasons. His wealth doesn't lead to happiness for him, nor does it bring contentment to anyone else. This also highlights how impoverished many rural areas of the United States were at the start of the 20th century, and how susceptible people were to being taken advantage of by oil tycoons. The cinematography is captivating, and the rhythm effectively pulls us into the carefully developed characters who seem like a natural progression from earlier trailblazers. I wasn’t entirely satisfied with the ending; it felt somewhat superfluous, anticlimactic—even hurried. The final ten minutes possess their own level of intensity that, while showcasing the talents of Dano and DDL, didn't quite resolve everything as I would have preferred. Nevertheless, it remains a remarkable film with solid writing supporting a progression of desires…
