Seeing Terence Stamp these days prompts questions about how he gained such legendary recognition – until I revisit movies like this one. He portrays a mysterious, captivating man who enters and resides with an affluent household, charming each family member—both the children and adults; seemingly everyone—before leaving them shattered, their previously stable, though somewhat unfulfilled, lives now marked by significant absences. While sexuality is a central element, PP Pasolini also invites consideration of the characters’ inner workings – what motivates them, their wants both expressed and hidden, their restrained feelings and minor failings – all conveyed with minimal conversation, which proves to be quite impactful. Ennio Morricone crafts an exceptional soundscape for this film (though the trumpets aren't entirely successful), complemented by Mozart’s music and the subtle yet refined cinematography set against a picturesque Lombard landscape, resulting in a film that provokes reflection and introspection.
