A frequently copied but seldom surpassed film. Strange fatalities are happening in the New Mexico desert, and it’s discovered they're caused by enormous mutated ants that originated from the "A Bomb" experiments conducted there. The situation worsens when one of the giant queen ants makes her way to Los Angeles and begins laying eggs, which could spell doom for humanity. This is a story serving as a warning about meddling with science, set against the backdrop of Cold War fears regarding a danger to national security. It contains some truly memorable sequences, like the initial desert confrontation (obscured by a sandstorm) and the concluding underground fight; Them! offers an altogether pleasant viewing experience. It has just the right level of anxiety that grew increasingly prevalent during the nuclear era. The puppets and visual effects are remarkably good considering the time period (and Ralph Ayres deservedly received an Academy Award nomination), and Gordon Douglas’s direction is among the stronger examples within the genre. Any reservations about how believable the plot is fade away because of its well-structured narrative, while the performances are surprisingly strong for this kind of film. James Whitmore, Edmund Gwenn, and Joan Weldon all contribute significantly to the picture. It became Warner Brothers' highest-earning movie in 1954, and it’s easy to understand why. This is undoubtedly one of the better entries in what is unfortunately a frequently dismissed category. 8/10
