It's possible that Thelma might have become a lowbrow exploitation of older people, resulting in something quickly dismissed. It’s easy to envision a movie relying on predictable jokes about aging – things like memory lapses, outbursts, or incontinence. A story centered around someone simply meant to be the butt of jokes. Thankfully, what we get is laughter shared with Thelma Post, and directed at the preconceived notions and stereotypes surrounding older people that she systematically challenges and dismantles. It’s excellent writing, wonderfully portrayed by June Squibb, performing exceptionally well. They work together to offer a touching illustration that even at 93 – or particularly at 93 – one deserves the ability to preserve their autonomy and self-respect. And possibly cause a few explosions along the way.
