During a seizure triggered by the flashing lights (or possibly the singing) at a local amateur production of "Bye Bye Birdie," Joan (played by Amy Sedaris) is incapacitated, leaving her opportunistic and not particularly intelligent son, Troy (Jimmy Tatro, who resembles Channing Tatum), responsible for her summer theater camp. The camp’s functionality relies heavily on Amos (Ben Platt), Rebecca-Diane (Molly Gordon), and the all-around technical assistant Glenn (Noah Galvin). A more prestigious performing arts program operates nearby and has its sights set on acquiring the land, so when a potential foreclosure arises, everyone must band together to generate funds and prevent the camp’s destruction. Will they succeed? Is that even something I was hoping for? Having grown up outside of a culture where summer camps are common, the premise felt artificial and exaggerated, reminiscent of "Glee" but lacking the depth of “Fame.” The child actors mostly proved irritating, as did the meandering plotline involving the two adult leads. There’s one worthwhile song, though it takes some time to arrive; otherwise, the film's documentary-style cinematography provides a close look at the lives of these struggling professionals tasked with inspiring a group of young people who failed to hold my interest. I was alone in the theater when I saw this—it wasn’t as bad as that, but not by much.
