Queen Victoria’s life has often been presented on screen much later in her reign, and this film's attempt to show her early years doesn't quite succeed in any meaningful way. Emily Blunt brings a sense of strength to the role of the Queen, but the performances from Rupert Friend and Paul Bettany fail to really convey the difficulties she faced while trying to assert herself as a young woman leading an empire full of prejudice, personal agendas, and self-importance. Miranda Richardson offers some support in this disappointing film, and Harriet Walter’s appearances as the dowager Queen Adelaide are also a positive aspect. If you view it solely as a romance, it might be acceptable, but anything beyond that feels completely unattainable.
