Wuchak on The Yellow Handkerchief

8/10 · Jun 19, 2021

_**A heartfelt journey through Louisiana about three isolated individuals searching… for belonging**_ After Hurricane Katrina, three people find themselves together and embark on a trip across Louisiana, ultimately heading to New Orleans. The group includes a teenage girl, around 15 years old (Kristen Stewart), a shy adolescent hoping to become her boyfriend (Eddie Redmayne), and an enigmatic older man (William Hurt) whose background is gradually revealed during their travels. A woman living by the coast who holds significance for the man also appears as a character (Maria Bello). “The Yellow Handkerchief” (2008) is a quiet drama and road movie featuring capable actors, centered on three individuals feeling like outsiders searching for connection and a place to belong while one individual seeks forgiveness. It feels authentic and ultimately leaves you with a sense of warmth. While the film may be considered commonplace, it demonstrates how stories about everyday people can often be more captivating than elaborate productions filled with special effects. A simple exchange of glances between Stewart and Hurt is a good example of this success—something that “My Own Love Song” (2010) failed to achieve. Filming occurred in February 2007, when Stewart was nearing her seventeenth birthday. I'm not typically drawn to her work, but she appears well and delivers a strong performance. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 42 minutes and was filmed on location in Louisiana. GRADE: A-
