Mickey Rourke delivers a strong performance as "Randy," a wrestling star whose career has declined. He was once a major attraction, but now his physical abilities have diminished, leading him to retire after a particularly brutal match. His life had been filled with excitement and spectacle, but retirement proves far less glamorous. Still needing employment, he finds work at a supermarket, struggling to make ends meet while hoping to reconnect with his daughter, "Stephanie" (Evan Rachel Wood), whom he hasn't seen in years. The wrestling sequences are exciting and engaging, effectively demonstrating how fleeting fame can be for these performers and the toll that injury and age take on their bodies and spirits. However, I wasn’t as captivated by the somewhat forced and foreseeable family drama that emerges later. His romantic pursuits with "Cassidy" (Marisa Tomei) didn't hold my attention, nor did his efforts to mend his strained relationship with "Stephanie." Fortunately, this less compelling storyline gives way to a climactic showdown against his equally weathered rival, "the Ayatollah" (Ernest Miller). The dialogue is sharp and often humorous, and the fight scenes are skillfully directed, conveying both the physical demands of wrestling and the understanding that it's about entertainment rather than genuine violence. Rourke successfully portrays both the wrestler and the anguished father, making this film a worthwhile viewing experience.
