Having left his Xhosa community in search of employment, "Xolani," or simply “X” (played by Nakhane), returns as a caregiver, tasked with preparing young men for their upcoming initiation rites. This tradition involves being painted white and undergoing circumcision, a practice carrying a significant risk of severe infection. He reconnects with his married friend, "Vija" (Bongile Mantsai), revealing an unusual bond that they feel compelled to conceal. The situation becomes complicated when one of the initiates, "Kwanda" (Niza Jay), suspects something and demonstrates a willingness to create problems. What emerges is a delicately portrayed narrative centered on two men navigating a precarious situation. They grapple with their personal emotions while fulfilling obligations to their families, community, and cultural heritage; as circumstances escalate, “X” must confront challenging decisions and resort to extreme measures. Dialogue is sparse in this film; the cinematography and understated setting carry much of the weight, allowing us to witness their unfolding drama against a backdrop of customs that can be unsettling at times. Initially, it might seem easy to pass judgment on "Kwanda," but understanding the context of their cultural values complicates any straightforward assessment that someone from Western cultures might have. The film feels remarkably authentic; the characters appear genuine and are engaging to watch. It’s definitely worth investing ninety minutes in.
