Florence Pugh portrays Mrs. Wright, an English nurse who journeys to Ireland to care for a girl who hasn’t eaten in some time. Or so she believes. When she arrives, she learns from those in charge that her role, along with a nun (Josie Walker), isn't nursing at all, but observing what occurs with the young girl, Anna (Kíla Lord Cassidy). The question arises: is this a deception or perhaps divine intervention sustaining the girl despite minimal nourishment beyond occasional sips of water? Tom Burke appears as Will, a journalist and local who previously lived in London and still grapples with personal struggles. He and the nurse develop a connection, despite their differing perspectives on the situation, and she commits to uncovering the truth. Pugh’s performance is noteworthy; she embodies a thoughtful and empathetic character, but one who isn't easily fooled. The narrative unfolds gradually, and I must admit that I felt the ending was somewhat far-fetched and didn't quite hit the mark, though Pugh and young Cassidy elevate the film considerably. Dialogue is restrained, complemented by striking visuals of an Ireland still marked by anti-English feelings and religious beliefs.
